Working in AI is not itself a qualification. But the right AI/ML background — research contributions, deployed systems at scale, novel applications — produces some of the strongest Global Talent cases.
The AI/ML field presents a paradox for Global Talent applications. On one hand, it is one of the most active and visible areas in UK tech — assessors understand the sector and recognise its importance. On the other, the field has attracted enormous numbers of practitioners, and working in AI is not itself exceptional. The question is not "do you work in AI?" but "what have you specifically contributed that advances the field?"
AI/ML professionals span a wide spectrum, and the evidence strategy differs significantly depending on where you sit:
Research and publication — AI researchers with published papers in peer-reviewed venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ACL, etc.) have a particularly clean evidence type. Academic publication with peer review is one of the most independently verifiable forms of sector recognition. Citations are trackable. The venue quality is assessable. Letters from research collaborators or academic supervisors can speak specifically to the technical significance of the work.
For researchers, the key question is: has your work been cited and built upon by others? Citation impact is strong evidence of sector-level contribution. A paper that dozens of other researchers reference is clearer evidence than a paper that hasn't been engaged with.
Applied research — professionals who work at the boundary of research and application (DeepMind, Waymo, Hugging Face, applied AI at large tech companies) often have a hybrid evidence challenge: the research is published and verifiable, but the application is proprietary. The strategy is to maximise the publicly verifiable component (publications, open source contributions, conference presentations) and use letters from colleagues to contextualise the proprietary work.
Engineering and deployment — ML engineers who focus on building and deploying models at scale, rather than researching novel approaches, have a different evidence challenge. The innovation claim needs to be about the engineering — what was technically difficult about the system, what approaches you developed, how it changed what was possible. Evidence here tends to come from: public writing about the engineering challenges, open source tools or frameworks you released, and letters from colleagues who can describe what was novel about the approach.
AI/ML has an unusually strong culture of open source contribution, and this works in favour of practitioners making Global Talent applications. Tools and libraries that have achieved broad adoption in the community — frameworks, model implementations, dataset tools, evaluation libraries — are independently verifiable evidence of sector contribution.
Notable examples of the kind of contribution that works: a model implementation that became the standard reference for a technique, a dataset that the community adopted, a tool that reduced the friction of working with a specific model type.
For ML engineers who have built internal tools that solved real problems, consider whether any of it can be open-sourced before the application. Not everything — proprietary model architectures and business-specific systems often can't be — but some tools have the potential to contribute back to the community and create clean public evidence.
Top performance in machine learning competitions — particularly Kaggle competitions with high prize pools and large fields — is evidence of peer-assessed technical ability. A Kaggle Grandmaster or consistently top-5 finisher has demonstrated that experienced practitioners in the field assessed their work as exceptional.
This is particularly useful evidence for earlier-career ML engineers who may not yet have the deployed systems or publication record to anchor their application. Competition performance is objectively ranked, independently verifiable, and widely understood in the technical community.

The weakest letters come from: managers who describe you as an excellent team member without technical specifics, general colleagues who speak to work ethic and collaboration, or senior people at your organisation who lack personal knowledge of the specific technical contributions.
The AI/ML field is moving rapidly enough that early-career professionals can have genuinely exceptional contributions. A 25-year-old who has two NeurIPS papers with significant citation impact may have a stronger Talent case than a 35-year-old ML engineer who has spent ten years deploying incremental production systems.
The calibration question: does your evidence show established track record of sector-level impact (Talent), or does it show exceptional promise with a clear trajectory toward that level (Promise)?
For most mid-career ML engineers without publications: Promise is probably the honest and stronger positioning unless you have deployed systems with demonstrable sector impact and external recognition.
